Question:

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Media Language - location, camerawork, sound, editing, miss-en-scene and performance type.

One way that music videos can differ from each other is by using different editing styles and techniques. This can mean using different cut types, filters, length and speed, transitions and graphics. An example of two music videos that differ from each other by their editing is 'If I Were A Boy' by Beyonce and 'Uptown Funk' by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

In 'If I Were A Boy', there are long cuts and clips that help tell the story of this narrative based music video. There are also no graphics in this video to help convey the seriousness of this song. Throughout the video, a monochrome filter has been placed onto it to also bring across a more serious theme. This can relate to the Laura Mulvey theory because Beyonce still looks glamorous and the simplicity of the video's editing makes the focus on her.

There are different editing techniques in 'Uptown Funk' that makes it differ from the other music video. The cuts are different in this video and are made to change clip along with the beat, whereas the other video changed slowly to tell the story. In this video, there is also a filter on it, but a filter where the colour looks more saturated to make the video look more retro and urban to match with the theme. This music video also has a different theory it can be related to and that is the Hebdige theory. This is because the editing has made the video look quite youthful and that they are all having fun.

Applying Media Theory

Applying Media Theory01/02/18

L.O. apply media terminology when analysing music videos.

If I Were A Boy - Beyonce

  • Laura Mulvey's theory applies to this video because Beyonce is seen as very glamorous and feminine all throughout the video, even while being a police officer. This may be attractive for males as she has been represented for 'the male gaze'.

Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson

  • In this video, there is a bit of Laura Mulvey's theory that women are represented attractively for males, this happens at the start of the Uptown Funk video.
  • There are also some aspects of the Hebdige theory in the video because it looks like the people in the video are quite young and are having fun.
